The Billboard Roll Call: David Cook

Bookmark and Share

The Billboard Roll Call is a listing of regional artists who charted a song on the Billboard Top 40 from 1955-2009. The introduction has additional information.

Anyone looking to see how much the music industry has changed can look at David Cook’s career.

A native of the Kansas City suburb of Blue Springs, Mo., Cook was the winner of the 2008 season of American Idol. Since then, Cook has worked steadily and has established a moderately high profile. If he has not reached the level of such Idol winners as Carrie Underwood or Kelly Clarkson, he hasn’t flamed out either.

In today’s Top 40, rock is dead. The physical single disappeared a long time ago, so in today’s fragmented world, Cook’s success has been with digital downloads and and cuts from his first album, David Cook. Through 2009, Cook has charted five songs, including The Time of My Life, which hit No. 1 on the adult contemporary chart.

This doesn’t include 11 Idol performances released during the competition that appeared on such charts as the Pop 100, Hot Digital Songs and Bubbling Under (essentially songs 101-125, the ones below the Billboard Hot 100).

If it seems confusing, well, it is. Welcome to today’s music industry.

Cook’s latest album, This Loud Morning, was released on June 28, 2011. His web site announced on Sept. 12 that he will c0-headline a tour with Gavin DeGraw beginning Oct. 9.

  1. David has been very successful. He’s an amazing talent and I believe he has a long career ahead of him.

  2. Have really enjoyed Cook’s latest CD. Favorites are Circadian and Goodbye to The Girl.

  3. I have to agree with you, “he hasn’t flamed out either”. I believe that slow and steady wins the race. There’s honest and raw talent in David Cook, maybe that’s why I’m still following his musical career. =)

  4. Thanks everyone for your comments! Idol can be a blessing or a curse, and I think he’s doing everything right to sustain a long-term career.

  5. David Cook is one of the best talents out there. I’ve followed his career and have been to several concerts. He is great live, and that is the “test” of a great vocalist. I love his latest cd, “This Loud Morning,” and can’t wait to see him in concert again. I firmly believe that if he had entered the music scene before it’s current “condition,” he would have been even more successful than he is. He’s also a very nice person; down-to-Earth.

David’s album, This Loud Morning, is a great work of artistic integrity, many layered, that , I believe, will have a long arc of on-going sales as he gets out and tours and turns new people on to his immense talent. David is in it for the long haul, and we have only begun to see a hint of his full potential.

  7. I enjoyed David so much on Idol, that I bought his post-Idol CD…..and LOVE it! So I bought “This Loud Morning” when it came out on 6/28, and I love that one just as much. I believe David has quite a career ahead of him and I plan to continue following it/him!

  8. Agrees with all the posts here! David is so talented that he’ll have a long career and he would steadily go forward and up!!
