Another Verse is my campaign to present a more complete picture of Kansas City’s music history. Jazz deserves to be the first verse of the song. It’s what we’re known for, and the quality of the players and significance of the performances may never be equalled.
However, one verse does not a song make. You want the whole song? You’ve got to hear the other verses.
That’s what this blog is about – playing the other verses that make up Kansas City’s song.
It’s the big stuff, like Michael Jackson and his brothers kicking off their Victory tour at Arrowhead Stadium. Or Melissa Etheridge, the Grammy- and Oscar-winning performer, growing up in Leavenworth and gigging in Kansas City.
It’s smaller stuff, involving the people who make the gears turn: backing musicians, engineers, producers, promoters, DJs.
And it’s about Kansas City’s entire legacy as significant music town. Not just in jazz, but in rock, country, blues, R&B, hip-hop, classical, Broadway and contemporary Christian.
Some were born here and moved away. Others were born and got their start here, then moved to bigger music towns. Some stayed and made their history here. Some settled in the community after making their history.
No matter what the story is, they all deserved to be remembered and celebrated.
